Samsung 1-dong Culture Center.
It has been a long time since I started to participate in architectural design competitions. I have entered competitions about nine times, yet I have not won any prizes. Will I able to do so in the future? In the vicinity of I'Park Tower designed by Daniel Libeskind was the site for a new culture center cum Dong-office(district office). In Korea there is a very strong tendency for large buildings to immediately become a context. However, such energy fails to reach 20-lane roads. After all, the site appeared to be destined to become contexts or sources of hubbub. But the plane trees densely lined along the streets dampened such noise. I imagined a jogging track and a park covered with transparency above the trees. And I imagined making the building resemble trees. A structure resembling a tree constitutes outer walls, surrounded by mesh and ivy vine walls. Its exterior will be covered with media skin that delivers information and visuals. The main access area will start with a green space and will become a sloped path gradually turning into an ivy vine skin. When one reaches the summit, it is resolved into to a grass lawn.
