Ilsan 21 Neurosurgery Clinic.
I was requested to transform a part of the fifth floor of a massive building that had been produced by an illconceived land plot-sectioning scheme by Ilsan New Town into a 250-pyeong clinic. The director of the medical clinic wanted a waiting area as spacious as possible with many wards and despite a relatively small budget it was a project without any particular restraints. I recalled the time when my father had been hospitalized a long time age due to a traffic accident. And during my visit to the hospital I had these romantic tales about the beautiful and warm-hearted nurses, and also thought about the fantasies men have towards nurses. I planned a space where nurses are standing in a standing bar and chairs are placed along a long curved bar. However, the clinic authorities expressed difficulty in managing unfixed chairs. So, the nurse station was separated and its furniture was also placed like fixed, yet diverse islands. "Oh, is this a beauty salon?" A passer-by commented as I was standing at the site. I looked and restrained my self from blurting out loud, "No, it is an odd and inappropriate space where glamorous nurses are standing and soft and voluptuous sofas are freely placed, allowing patients to briefly forget their pain". |
